I don't recall the name of the particular boss, but it may have been the one where you need to drag him into an aoe circle on the ground to remove his shield or some stacks that reduce damage on him (it's been a while so my memory is a bit fuzzy on the exact mechanic). Could be whoever was tanking him before you taunted may have been moving him about for that reason, and keeping him in one spot caused him to die slower.
They may also have wanted to move him to one of the power ups where he would have taken damage from the slasher demon npc that spawns, or something similar, and taunting him so he didn't move means the npc couldn't hit him.
Lots of different mechanics to get used to in NMR's.. some of which will cause you to fail the stage if you don't know them, which will cause the rift to close.
