marking/unmarking in wf's

For those who have not pvp'd since release, allow me a moment to stroll down memory lane.

Originally, like experts, only the raid leader had permissions to mark/unmark. And people would cry out "give me assist" "Mark XXXXX he's a healer" and the like. And only numbers 1-8 were available to mark. Sometimes there were marks, sometimes not. sometimes the marks were right, sometimes not.

Then for a short while some people would just build into their pvp macro, or hot key, "/mark 1" making their target priority and each time they switch (normally after a kill) the next target would receive the #1. Some liked that some, not so much.

Years later Trion expanded the marking system to include all the fun pictures of today. And then they gave everyone irrevocable assist in every wf.

Well it wasn't long before healers cried "mark the dom" and in addition to numbers and green crosses on healers some began to put squirrels on doms. Then people complained "stop hitting him he's a tank" and some people began putting shields over tanks. Then some healers said "hey I'm marking myself so when people need heals they can find me and run over by me" Pretty soon people were saying" I'm putting a sword on that guy, he's top damage" "I need to mark myself and my friends so I can find them easily" Hey there's that guy I talked to I'll mark him with a sad face. It will be funny" And arguments ensued. Mark em with numbers. Mark with crosses. He's not #1 that guys #1, I want the radioactive sign, I'm always radio active. Chaos reigned.

Then one person made a couple of macros. Macro "1; /clearallmarks. Macro #2; /wf If you play with marks by marking anything but healers with green crosses I will remove all the marks.

OUTRAGE!!!!! Many said if I can't mark as I like I quit. Many cried "who said you could do that?" And many left wf's. And the same power that allows you to mark as you please, allows anyone to remove as they please. It truly is a two way street.

Today much has calmed down in wf's but all the time the persistent few, fight to mark their way. I use skulls and I will always use skulls. Numbers 1-8 are perfect they layout an order. You have to mark tanks. You have to mark their top dps. You have to mark doms.

What is the answer?

The one thing most pvpers agree on is healers need to be targeted and killed as fast as possible.

So what about doms? Doms drain our healers and make it near impossible to heal our team. So mark them right? Or should you? Are doms alone attacking a raid hard to kill? Not really. they die really quick when not healed. So if you have say 6 dps and 4 are focused aon 2 different healers and 2 on a dom being healed. The odds are you will not be successful killing any of them. So 6 dps focused on 2 different healers probably kill both and then can easily can anyone within range of your healer to protect them.

Now of course this statement is anecdotal. What if there are 2 doms, 4 healers and a tank? You could what if things forever. Play for the norm and improvise the abnormal. I have often been asked "what if they are 5 or more healers, ther are only 4 green crosses?" if there are more than 4 healers on the other team, marks aren't your problem. If you can kill those 4 your fine. If you can't your screwed anyway.

So why not just numbers? Ask 10 people who pvp what the number one means and you get several answers. It's a top dps, it's the top healer, it's the next target, it's a carrier. So there is your answer. Maybe all your friends agree, but do they agree with everyone else? If they did this post would never have happened. So why do people mark with ones or skulls? Many of them have it macro'd into their spam button to help inflate their own numbers. By doing so they get everyone to help them kill their target. This increases the chance of receiving a killing blow. Some genuinely believe they know the best targets and that they should be showing everyone who to attack. Do they? Sometimes yes, often no.

Okay but certainly we agree that a carrier needs an arrow over his head right? In a game where every carrier has a light stream shooting out of his head to the heavens, and their name appears on your screen with an enemy bullet next to them. A name you can use to target them from btw. Why on earth do you need to mark them any further. And if that carrier is being healed, you'd better kill or CC that healer or your just peeing into the wind.

But tanks. You have to mark tanks or people waste their time hitting them. So you mark a tank and people avoid him, and he picks up shard, or caps point, or pulls your healer and CC's them. Good thing we avoided them huh?

I admit that the argument could be made that people have to know what to do, and marking just helps them. But if you have pvp'd at all you have seen on numerous occasions some poor soul chasing an enemy in a circle, around an enemy healer with a big green cross on them, trying to kill them while the target is being healed by the same healer he is running around. or standing next to. If you think the public makes good choices take a look at our future presidential candidates.

And healers, why do dps have to run to you for heals? do you have your raids and tank come to you for heals there. Figure out how and who to heal and do it. Or don't heal. Since when do healers dictate where people should go in a wf. You're not giving out money. You are suppose to be contributing to your teams victory. for example If someone has run in 10 times and died almost immediately, STOP HEALING HIM. It's a lost cause not a lost puppy.If someone is in tank build and he' standing next to you dpsing from range. PLEASE LET HIM DIE. If your attitude is is "I just spam group heals" go join a raid as their raid healer. WF's have strategy, Yes even for healers.

And if you think "i'm a good wf leader" You have no idea how wf's work. Because no wf ever needed a leader. Anyone smart enough to listen to someone in a wf, doesn't need your advice. And like wise, anyone who needs your advice, isn't smart enough to listen. So besides yourself, who are you leading?

The best advice to any new or wanna be good pvper, is find a real mentor. Someone who understands the damage numbers and healing numbers in pvp are meaningless. Till then, see ya in the wf kiddo
