Scaling Down While Levling?

Hello!

I played Rift a while back and am looking to return. I'm in no particular rush to get to end-game - this is going to be a casual/side thing.

I'd like to complete most of the zone quests as I go and really soak in the story/environment. However, I'm reasonably sure this would result in me over-leveling, and I want to still get xp as I go.

So here's my question: is it viable to play through the story and quests while scaling myself down to the zone level as I go? I remember hearing something like that this would work for pre-Storm Legion, but that if I were still vanilla content at or above level 50, I'd be getting pretty much no experience or progress for it even if I were scaled such that the vanilla quests were "on-level."

Sorry if this is worded in a confusing way. Would love to hear any of your thoughts and experiences about how viable this is, or whether doing earlier quests while scaled down past level 50 basically nets me no xp.
